Silk

Silk is a very delicate fabric, and you may feel nervous about washing any silk products you own. Take out the anxiety now when washing silk and here are a few simple steps you can take to give this luxurious fabric the care it deserves.

Check the fabric care label

Before you put a silk item in the machine, check the tag to see if it can be machine-washed. Some silk items may lose color or get damaged in the machine. Hand wash is recommended of course. For heavy stuff, i.g. silk comforters, choose spot cleaning instead of overall wash.

Sort the laundry

Don't wash silk and delicate fabric with heavy pieces of clothing like jeans.

Place silk items in a mesh bag

Using a delicate wash bag will protect your silks from any abrasive damage.

Add silk wash or delicate detergent

Silk detergents are specifically formulated to gently clean and care for delicate silk fabrics, preserving their softness and luster. Typically, dilute a small amount of the detergent in cool or lukewarm water. Gently swirl the water to create a mild soapy solution.

Start a delicate cycle

Your machine should have a delicate wash option, and also choose the shortest spin cycle and wash at the temperature recommended by the fabric care label.

Soak up water and hang to dry

Gently squeeze out excess water and lay the robe flat on a clean towel. Roll up the towel to absorb the moisture, then carefully unroll and reshape the robe. Air dry it in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

Linen

Linen is an incredible fabric for many reasons. It is natural, strong, and high quality. Its durability, breathability, and resistance to bacteria sets linen apart from other natural fibers. When cared for properly, it gets softer and more beautiful with age while maintaining its shape, making it a good choice for clothing, towels, sheets, and more. 

To Wash

Use the gentle cycle on your washing machine and wash with similar lightweight fabrics. Of course, washing by hand in a large sink or bathtub is an option as well. 

Wash in lukewarm or cold water with mild detergent. Hot water can cause linen to shrink.

Separate light colors from dark colors to keep them looking sharp. 

Avoid fabric softener. Linen will soften on its own over time. 

Do not use bleach or detergent with a whitening agent. Even on white linen, the bleach will blotch the fabric and damage the fibers.

To Dry

Tumble dry on low. High heat will cause the fibers to break down faster and possibly shrink. 

To Iron

Press on low/medium heat, preferably when the fabric is still a little damp out of the dryer.
